Well, he’s four months old now, but I was happy to finally meet the newest addition to one of my favorite families. YES … I do have favorites! It’s hard to believe that I first met these folks when I photographed big brother at the same age, in the same house. There was a little bit of deja vu happening for me during this session because these boys look very much alike! But now, we have a doting big brother and that special relationship which is always so much fun to capture. And, unlike his brother at that age, the new little guy did not fall asleep during the session. (I do tend to have that effect on babies Anyway, here are a few of my favorites:

Seven months ago, a little miracle was born. We all know (or should know) that EVERY human life is a miracle. But sometimes it takes a story, like this one, to make us remember.

So, the world was ready to meet little Jake … friends and family excitedly anticipating his arrival. And I’ve been photographing this family for years, so I was ready to get my hands on the newest addition. The trouble was, Jake’s tiny body had different plans. His underdeveloped lungs and sick little kidneys left him clinging to life. Within hours of his birth, my Facebook page lit up with prayer requests for this precious baby and his family. And my first thoughts went straight to his parents — wondering how on earth you get through something like this. They had lots of help and support from family and friends pitching in to do whatever they could … and call after call to the man upstairs.

After several days in the PICU, Jake’s mom was finally able to hold her sweet boy. Then, things started to look up for baby Jake. Turns out, this little guy is a big-time fighter. He was finally able to breathe totally on his own and open his eyes to meet one of his big sisters (he’s got two of the coolest big sister’s around). A few weeks later, baby Jake was able to go home for the first time. I think there was a collective sigh of relief on Facebook that day. Jake has endured quite a bit already in his short life — surgeries, procedures, feeding tubes and all the poking and prodding that comes with hospitals. But this kid just keeps pushing forward.

This was my second photo session with Jake … but I gotta tell you … when I walked in a saw him this time, I got a little emotional. In an effort to maintain an ounce or two of professionalism, I held it together … but, he was quite a bit changed from the last time I saw him (a few months ago). He’s a happy, smiling, contented (even a little plump) baby boy!! While there is still a long road ahead for this baby and family, I have no doubt they will endure. Tiny miracles.

Here are some of my favorites from this session. Check out his two fabulous sisters. They are both completely smitten with their little brother.

So, I’m happy (and a little sad) to announce that a new little munchkin has officially graduated from “babyhood”. You know one of the many cool things about my super-cool job? Well, here it is … I get to witness and record a child’s growth and milestones from newborn, to infant, to sitter, to crawler, to cruiser, to toddler … and hopefully beyond. And I get to know their awesome parents and pets (and siblings or future siblings). I love this job. But enough about me.

I love working with this family and this “baby” girl. She is always good for a smile. Always. And I love her big “brother”, Charlie the Beagle — even if he did eat my flip-flop! Ha!

Are your kids’ school portraits …. blah? Through no fault of our own, we send our adorable kids to school for portrait day, and their pictures come back looking less than adorable. The standard “cookie cutter” picture day consists of rushing kids through the process, unnatural smiles, cheesy backdrops or worse … the digital “choose your own background”. Yikes!

If any of this rings true to you, and you think your child’s school/preschool may be up for something new, contact me. I’ll send you and/or your school’s director and information packet on the school portrait options offered by Lauren Gill Photography. We spend enough time with each child to bring out your child’s real personality and capture those natural smiles. We use a natural outdoor or classroom setting to take your child’s portrait and we give you 2-3 fun “poses” to choose from. At the end of the week, we’ll follow your children on the playground and in the classroom to get some great candid moments of kids just being kids!!

There are a variety of portrait package options available for every budget (starting at $25) and every package includes a FREE class (group) photo. Digital CDs are also available for purchase.

We’ve been doing school portraits for 5 years now and parents and teachers have had wonderful things to say about this new approach to school photography. I have a limited number of spots available, so please contact me soon! Spring, Summer & Fall portrait options are available. Also ask about portraits for your Summer Camp or Sports Team!!

This little dude is always good for a bunch of big grins. We have lots of fun with our session, usually just chasing him around like paparazzi. But this time, we had him fairly contained in his home because he was celebrating his 2nd Birthday. They had a bubble theme which was seriously the coolest thing I’ve seen. The decorations, treats and food were so creative and fun! Made me want to have a bubble party. So here are a few pictures from his special day!

Boys are boys are boys. They all possess that those subtle boy traits. Most will eventually find a stick or a rock which must then be incorporated into the photos. Boys are magnets for dirt and mud. They will find the muddiest possible spot and go there first! It drives the moms crazy, but I like how it makes the portraits more real. The best pictures are kids just being themselves. Because, after all, isn’t that what we are trying to preserve? Our child’s actual personality, displayed naturally, in photos we will cherish for years.

Anyway, I happen to think that boys are awesome! And if there is anyone able to handle the awesomeness of boys, it is the mommy of these two little guys. She is nothing short of Super-Mom, holding down the fort while their daddy is off protecting and serving our great country. She and all the other Mom’s like her are truly inspirational. I think I will make her a medal. And I will make her wear it in our next photo session! Are you reading this, Mom? Get ready!
